Last week, I won passes to see Lorde at the Alt 98.7 penthouse in the Hollywood Tower and I finally got to see her today! For those who have never heard of Lorde, she’s a sixteen-year-old singer-songwriter from New Zealand who became really popular due to her song “Royals”, which hit #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. She is also the first female artist to reach the top of the US Billboard Alternative Songs chart since 1996!
I always drive by the Hollywood Tower on my way to and from work so it was cool being able to actually go inside the building. The Hollywood Tower was built in 1929 and is considered the inspiration for the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror ride at various Disney parks.
After checking in, my friend Elena and I walked up several flights of stairs to a rooftop section where they served Chick-fil-a sandwiches and some alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. People ate, people drank, people mingled. There were signs for the bathroom which actually led to an empty apartment in the building that had a wonderful view of…the 101 freeway. We were in that section for a good while before they finally opened up the other side of the rooftop where the actual performance took place.
As far as the performance went, Lorde was naturally amazing. She has a great live voice that sounds very close to her recordings, which is a good thing because there are quite a bit of artists out there who can put out a good track but can’t match the vocals during live concerts. She sang five songs which included “Bravado”, “Tennis Court”, “White Teeth Teens”, “Buzzcut Season”, and of course, “Royals”.
We got to take a picture with Lorde afterwards, though they had this weird rule to make the line move faster where you needed to be in groups of four for the picture. Since I was only there with my friend, we paired up with another two and agreed to arrange ourselves in a way where we could just crop each other out. I actually like the matching aqua, black, and white colors of the picture with the other two included so I decided to just leave them in…for now.
Lorde’s debut studio album Pure Heroine comes out at the end of September, but you can stream her full album online before the release. Check it out here.
Going to an Alt 98.7 penthouse performance was fun and I definitely want to go to another one eventually, preferably at night this time when the sun isn’t blazing down and the hanging lights are all lit up.
